Original Watercolour and Gouache Painting - Surreal Colonnade Interior with Nude

PRODUCT DETAILS

• Material: Watercolour and gouache over pen-and-ink and graphite, on heavy handmade/mould-made watercolour paper with deckle edges

• Dimensions: Framed approx. 22 x 30 in; sight (floated sheet) approx. 16.5 x 24 in

• Color/Finish: Strong, unfaded color throughout — green marbled columns with gilt capitals, gilt harp and furniture accents, leopard-spot floor; glazed in a silver-gilt moulded frame with a linen mat

• Condition: Good. Colors strong and unfaded; light cockling typical of watercolour worked wet on unstretched paper; deckle edges intact with a few small fiber losses at the right edge; small rubs to the frame's high points and a faint crease/scuff in the lower-left mat

• Era/Period: Undated, later 20th century

• Subject: A stage-like colonnaded interior — four green marbled columns with gilt capitals and swagged pelmets open onto a bare desert with a windmill and outbuildings under a yellow sky, while inside a reclining nude rests on a green button-tufted daybed beside a gilt harp, a polar-bear rug, and a bronze figural lamp. No signature is visible in the sight area; the only mark on the sheet is a two-line embossed blind stamp in the lower-right corner, most likely a papermaker's mark, which is illegible at photographic resolution

This is an original hand-worked painting, not a print — the torn deckle edges on all four sides, granulating washes sitting in the paper's tooth, and the individually hand-stippled leopard-spot floor all point away from any mechanical reproduction. The piece is unsigned in the visible sheet area, so it goes to a new owner as an unattributed later-20th-century work rather than a piece tied to a named artist. Buyers drawn to detailed pen-and-wash figurative work with an unusual, theatrical composition will find plenty to look at up close, from the granulated washes to the fine stippled ground.
