George Sperl Signed Pen-and-Ink Print Monon Route 403 4-6-2 Steam Locomotive
PRODUCT DETAILS
• Material: Line-printed pen-and-ink image on lightly textured cream stock, hand-signed in pencil lower right; glazed and framed
• Dimensions: Approx. 22 7/8 x 17 1/2 in, framed (landscape orientation)
• Color/Finish: Black moulding frame with black outer mat, maroon inner liner, and a narrow pale-green bevel
• Condition: Sheet is clean and bright with no foxing, toning, tears, or cockling; frame and mats are also clean. This is a signed print reproducing the artist's pen-and-ink drawing rather than the original drawing itself — the solid black areas show even, print-consistent density rather than ink pooling or sheen
• Subject: Monon Route steam locomotive No. 403, a class K 4-6-2 Pacific, shown in side three-quarter view with tender lettering, number boards, and smoke plume
This is a hand-signed print of a Monon Route 4-6-2 Pacific No. 403 by George Sperl (1918/19-2014), a self-taught Indiana artist based in Munster and Gary who specialized in trains and exhibited with the Hoosier Salon between 1966 and 1987. The Monon Railroad subject and pencil signature make it a straightforward find for a Monon or Indiana railroad collector, and the piece arrives glazed and framed and ready to display.
