PRODUCT DETAILS

• Material: Original period newsprint pages laminated onto wood plaque boards under a glossy protective coating

• Dimensions: Approximately 15 x 20-21 in (Chronicle plaque) and 14 x 21-22 in (Examiner plaque), sold as a pair

• Color/Finish: Amber-toned newsprint under a glossy laminate finish; Examiner piece mounted on a black board

• Condition: No tears, creases, or losses on either page; both show overall yellowing/golden-brown toning from age and lamination, with the Chronicle page showing the strongest amber cast; the Examiner's black mounting board has scattered light surface scuffs; both are sealed under a glossy coating rather than glass

• Era/Period: 1966 and 1978 newspaper issues

• Subject: The San Francisco Chronicle's November 30, 1966 front page, "Three Truces in War," covering a Vietnam War holiday ceasefire, includes a photo caption naming Emmett Grogan (misspelled "Groggan") among Haight-Ashbury figures cleared of nuisance charges over a Halloween puppet show. Paired with it is the San Francisco Examiner's April 16, 1978 front page, "Hero of the Haight," the obituary for Emmett Grogan, Diggers co-founder and author of Ringolevio, reporting his death in New York at age 33.

These two original press-run pages, laminated onto wood plaques, bookend Emmett Grogan's story twelve years apart - one an incidental mention during his Haight-Ashbury Digger days, the other his front-page obituary. Sold together, they appeal to collectors of Haight-Ashbury and Digger counterculture ephemera rather than general historic-newspaper buyers, since neither headline is a world-historic event on its own.

The estate service behind this shop

Every piece here came out of a real home. VaultXL is a full-service estate transition and downsizing company — we sort, value, photograph and sell household belongings when a family downsizes or an estate settles, then hand the property back broom-clean.

  • Families keep 85% of every sale. Our 15% covers photography, research, listing, storage and buyer handling.
  • Flat project fees from $350 for a single room to $4,500 for a whole home — quoted after a free assessment, never billed hourly.
  • Jewelry, art, firearms and vehicles go to credentialed partner appraisers before anything is priced.

Serving Charlotte and the surrounding area. Other Carolinas metros are on a waitlist.
