PRODUCT DETAILS

• Artist/Composition: Alexander Calder (1898-1976), "Mosaique et ballons noirs", 1971, the composition created for XXe Siecle no. 37 (G. di San Lazzaro, Paris; printed by Mourlot)

• Signature: Hand-signed in graphite pencil "Calder" lower right, "E.A." lower left, no edition fraction. The pencil is hand-applied, not printed. No certificate of authenticity is offered.

• Material: Color lithograph on heavy mould-made wove paper with deckle edges at the right and bottom; solid matte hand-edged color areas, with a small yellow ink drip running down from the mosaic

• Dimensions: Sheet approx 14 x 21 in; printed image approx 10 x 12 1/2 in; framed approx 17 1/4 x 23 1/2 in (measured framed, approximate)

• Color/Finish: Fourteen dark green-black discs on fine stems above a faceted red, blue and yellow mosaic bounded by heavy black lines; silver aluminium section frame

• Condition: Good, examined through the glass. Colors strong and unfaded, sheet clean and bright, deckle edges visible; a faint ripple runs across the sheet in raking light and there are one or two tiny specks in the lower margin. No tears, losses or mat burn visible; light handling marks to the frame.

• Era/Period: Composition 1971

Black balloons on stems over a color mosaic. The magazine plate of this image was printed small and trimmed into the composition; this impression shows the full mosaic on a large sheet with clean margins and deckle edges. The hand-lithographic character is easy to see up close, from the wavering black contours to the stray yellow drip, and the color is strong with no fading. One of three matching sheets framed at the same time in identical silver frames.
