Diabolo de Cartier "Happy Birthday" limited edition rollerball pen in palladium finish, with its original red Cartier presentation box and the original refill sleeve.
THE MODEL. Cartier issued the "Happy Birthday" Diabolo around 2007 to mark the maison's 160th anniversary. The body is turned with fine concentric ribbing running the full length of cap and barrel, with the interlocking double-C Cartier monogram engraved into the pattern at intervals. The domed cap crown carries the deep blue cabochon that echoes the sapphire winding crowns on Cartier watches. Flat integrated clip, palladium finish throughout.
WHAT IS INCLUDED. The pen, the original red Cartier box with gold-tone clasp and the brass "Serie Limitee" plaque, and the original Cartier refill sleeve marked CROP000100 / BLACK INK ROLLERBALL PEN REFILL. No papers.
CONDITION. Very good to excellent. Bright and even, no dents, no wear-through on the high points, no pitting. Light handling marks consistent with careful storage. The blue cap jewel is intact and unchipped.
FINISH NOTE. Palladium, not sterling. Cartier moved to palladium in the late 1980s and France does not hallmark palladium, which is why no silver standard mark is present. Buyers familiar with the line expect exactly that.
MARKET NOTE. Comparable Happy Birthday Diabolos are commonly offered between $1,100 and $2,800. This one is priced well under that band because it comes without papers, and because it is offered to sell rather than to sit.
