• Companion work: Beverly Pepper's signed ink and watercolour on a yellow ground, signed and dated 'B Pepper '61', is also in our inventory. Its looping forms, and the small pencil sketch at its lower right, are this sculpture. The two are from the same owner
Beverly Pepper turned from painting to sculpture in 1960. Her first sculptures were cut from felled trees, hollowed with power tools into twisting open forms and threaded with spidery strands, before she learned to weld in 1962. This is a work of exactly that moment: a hollowed wooden form of open loops, with rough cast metal strands running through it.
We have not found a signature on the sculpture itself. Its attribution rests on the owner's provenance and on the signed 1961 work on paper, which depicts it. The two can be offered together. Inquire for details, measurements and the pairing.
