PROVENANCE — 1999 MITCHEM ARTS APPRAISAL
Appraised 14 May 1999 by Holly Mitchem, ASA (Accredited in Fine Art, American Society of Appraisers) of Mitchem Arts, Ojai, California. Recorded there as item 40, a Monterey Desk, attributed by the appraiser to “Baker Brothers Furniture Company, Los Angeles”, circa 1930 — dark stained oak with wrought iron, 30 x 36 x 18 inches, described as a rancho style desk with one drawer running its width, two hammered iron drawer pulls, side and rear stretchers, and banded legs. Condition in 1999: very good. The Baker Brothers attribution on this listing therefore rests on an independent appraisal made in front of the piece, not on style alone.
The figure in that report was a retail replacement value for insurance scheduling, not a resale price, and it is 27 years old. It is not quoted here.
ATTRIBUTION CORRECTED 2026-09-15. The 1999 appraisal names the maker "Baker Brothers Furniture Company, Los Angeles." No such firm is documented. The Monterey line was designed by Frank Mason, manufactured by Mason Manufacturing Co. of Los Angeles from 1929, and retailed by BARKER BROS. of Los Angeles, the department store that commissioned it. "Baker Brothers" is a transcription error for Barker Bros. — the same kind of slip the appraisal makes elsewhere, where it calls a pair of Kroehler Del Rey chairs "Del Rio." This desk is sold as Monterey/rancho revival of the period; the specific maker is not marked on the piece.
