A French country commode carved with wedding symbolism. Each drawer front carries pairs of billing love birds perched on woven baskets, daisy rosettes, scrolling leaf sprays and a laurel wreath framing the keyhole, all inside a hand-notched border. Doves on a basket stood for fidelity and plenty on French marriage furniture, and the uneven, hand-cut carving shows a village maker's hand rather than a factory. The solid oak case is pinned with wooden pegs and stands on slim Louis XVI tapered legs, a lighter, leggier form the French call a sauteuse. Sized for an entry, a bedroom wall or a dining room serving piece.
