PROVENANCE — 1999 MITCHEM ARTS APPRAISAL
Appraised 14 May 1999 by Holly Mitchem, ASA (Accredited in Fine Art, American Society of Appraisers) of Mitchem Arts, Ojai, California. Recorded there as item 18: "Sunrise", Roy Lichtenstein, 1965, colour lithograph published by Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, 17 1/4 x 23 1/4 inches, signed by the artist in pencil lower right, framed in a plexiglass box.
CATALOGUE REFERENCE. Corlett II.7 — offset lithograph in colours, printed by Graphic Industries Inc., New York, published by Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, and commissioned by Castelli for Lichtenstein's 1965 exhibition. Impressions of this print were never numbered; the catalogue raisonné records the edition size as unknown. The absence of an edition number is normal for the work, not a question mark over it.
PROVENANCE. Received as a gift circa 1970 and held by one family since. The pencil signature is documented as present at inspection in August 1995 and again in the May 1999 report — it is not a recent addition. Unbroken single-family provenance with a contemporaneous appraisal by a credentialed ASA fine art appraiser is unusual for this print.
CONDITION. The colours have mellowed, which the 1999 report already recorded, so the change is long-standing rather than recent. This is characteristic of the edition: it was printed as an offset lithograph on lightweight wove paper, and impressions are commonly found with softened colour and light toning to the sheet. Sold as found, framed as it has hung.
