Antique Carved Walnut Ram's Head Armchair, Rococo Revival Pierced Crest, Louis XV Taste — Sold As Found
PRODUCT DETAILS
• Style: Rococo Revival, in the Louis XV taste. Continental.
• The rams: each cabriole leg is carved at the knee with a ram's head — the horn coiled around the ear, an almond eye, and the fleece carved as a pendant trail running down the leg to a scrolled toe. Carved in the round out of the leg itself, not applied.
• Crest: an asymmetrical pierced and scrolled crest rail, with a carved mask and a floral spray set inside the piercing
• Frame: serpentine back, foliate-carved arm terminals, moulded serpentine seat rail
• Construction: Solid carved show wood — walnut or mahogany — not laminated. The crest is cut from a single plank: the tool marks are still visible through the sawn piercing, and the frame has split along the grain, which laminated stock is built specifically not to do. That rules out the American laminated school and points to Continental work.
• Age and origin: Not established, and not claimed. The chair has not been examined by a specialist. On style and construction it reads as Continental Louis XV-revival work rather than an 18th-century chair, but that is a reading from the piece, not an attribution. It came to the family as "over 200 years old"; we cannot support that figure and do not repeat it as fact.
• Upholstery: Green silk brocade with pink and cream floral sprays and birds, finished with a gilt gimp braid. A later recovering, not original.
• Dimensions: Approximately 40 in high at the crest x 24 in wide across the arms
• Condition: Fair. SOLD AS FOUND — this is not a ready-to-use chair. There are structural cracks in the show wood, including a split through the crest rail and an open split across the back frame, and the upholstery is worn with losses to the braid.
WHY IT IS PRICED WHERE IT IS
The same model is offered elsewhere in giltwood and undamaged, above $3,000 before freight — and without the rams: those examples carry a plain acanthus leaf at the knee. This one is show wood rather than gilt over gesso, and it has the rams. It also has the split crest, and that is the whole of the difference in price. Budget for a frame repair and a re-cover.
With that work done it would make a striking accent chair for a parlour, study or bedroom.
