Ringolevio Flammarion French Poster 1973 Inscribed Signed Emmett Grogan Framed
PRODUCT DETAILS
• Brand: Flammarion (Paris) — publisher's promotional poster for the 1973 French edition of Emmett Grogan's Ringolevio
• Material: Offset-printed poster on paper with a seven-line graphite pencil inscription; framed under glass with a black mat in a narrow metal frame
• Color/Finish: Heavy blue display type over a duotone drawn portrait filled with black-and-white documentary photomontage on a white ground; polished silver frame
• Condition: Poster clean and bright with good contrast and light overall toning consistent with 1970s poster stock; no tears, foxing or losses visible through the glass. The glass has several long diagonal scratches at lower left and right, and the frame shows light scuffing. The pencil inscription is legible but light, with a few faint unresolved pencil marks in the upper-right white field. Sold as found.
• Era/Period: 1973; inscription dated 6/73
• Subject: Inscribed and signed "Emmett Grogan 6/73 / London" in pencil in the upper-left white field. The inscription is not authenticated and is offered unauthenticated, with the evidence disclosed: the name/date/place formula matches a documented Grogan-signed first edition inscribed "Emmett Grogan N.Y.C. 6/73" from the same month. Buyers wanting certainty should obtain their own handwriting comparison or autograph opinion. The printed poster design is signed with the monogram "DiH."; the illustrator has not been identified.
The inscription is the point of this piece: seven lines of personal pencil text to a named couple, closing "Simply with love, Emmett Grogan 6/73 London," including the line "If Charlie Parker played a machine gun instead of a horn, he would've played just as loud and for just as fucking long." Grogan, who helped found the Diggers in Haight-Ashbury, published only two books before his death in 1978 at 35, and dealers describe signed Grogan material as scarce. The poster itself is a piece of 1973 French publishing ephemera — an affiche for booksellers, with the Flammarion imprint at lower right and no price, ISBN or trade copy — making this a literary and counterculture autograph rather than a decorative print. Please note the frame has not been measured; measurements can be taken on request.
