REGIONAL STYLE NOT ASSIGNED. The palette and stepped geometry are consistent with more than one regional weaving tradition, and naming one from photographs would be a guess.

Handspun wool on a natural grey ground, with the small irregularities that tell you a loom and a person were involved. Works on a floor or on a wall.

PROVENANCE — 1999 MITCHEM ARTS APPRAISAL
Appraised 14 May 1999 by Holly Mitchem, ASA (Accredited in Fine Art, American Society of Appraisers) of Mitchem Arts, Ojai, California. Recorded there as item 58: Navajo Rug with Stepped Design, Arizona, circa 1920, aniline dyed and natural handspun wool, 45 x 25 1/2 inches, good original condition. The appraiser assigned it a PAN-RESERVATION style and described a black and cream border with a stairstepped "X" design in red, black and cream on a variegated ground. That settles the region question left open on this record.
The figure in that report was a retail replacement value for insurance scheduling, not a resale price, and it is 27 years old. It is not quoted here.
