This is an authentic hand-carved Hopi Kachina doll depicting a Whipper or Ogre-type katsina, signed and dated by the Hopi artist R. Wongnema in 1980. PROVENANCE — 1999 MITCHEM ARTS APPRAISAL
Appraised 14 May 1999 by Holly Mitchem, ASA (Accredited in Fine Art, American Society of Appraisers) of Mitchem Arts, Ojai, California. Recorded there as item 82, a Hopi Black Ogre Kachina, Arizona, circa 1980 — cottonwood with feathers, 14 x 4 inches. The appraiser transcribed the base inscription as "Hopi", "R. WONGNEMA" and the number 1750, which is what this base carries. Described as having a case mask, toothed snout, fur ruff and a friendship symbol on the forehead, holding a tomahawk in its right hand and a bow and two feathers in its left. Literature cited: Hopi Kachinas, p.29. Condition in 1999: very good.
The figure in that report was a retail replacement value for insurance scheduling, not a resale price, and it is 27 years old. It is not quoted here.
