Gorham English Gadroon sterling silver flatware, 44 pieces, service for 8, in its original fitted wood storage chest.

PATTERN CONFIRMED FROM THE MARK. The reverse of the handles is stamped ENGLISH GADROON over GORHAM STERLING. This is not a guess from the design — the maker's mark and pattern name are both legible on the pieces. English Gadroon was introduced by Gorham in 1939 and produced into the 1990s. Sterling throughout on handles and bowls; knife blades are stainless, which is correct for the period and not a fault.

NO MONOGRAM. The handles are unmonogrammed. This matters more than most buyers expect: monogrammed sterling sells for materially less, and matching-service pricing at the major replacement dealers is quoted specifically for un-monogrammed pieces.

WHAT THE PIECES ARE WORTH INDIVIDUALLY. Replacements Ltd currently lists this exact pattern at $279.95 for a 7 5/8 in dinner fork, $169.95 for a 7 1/8 in place fork, $179.95 for an oval soup spoon, $149.95 for a cream soup spoon, $119.95 for a salad fork, $89.95 for a teaspoon and $59.99-64.95 for a hollow knife. Across 44 pieces that is roughly $5,800 of individual replacement value, about $132 a piece. A complete set does not sell for the sum of its replacement prices — that market exists for someone matching one broken fork — but it is the honest ceiling, and it is why a set like this is worth more intact than broken up.

CONDITION. Tarnish throughout consistent with storage and easily polished. Minor surface scratches from use. No dents, no splits, no repairs seen. Chest intact with its original felt.

WEIGHT — TO BE CONFIRMED BEFORE SALE. Sterling flatware is priced against its silver content as well as its pattern, and the weight here is currently an estimate rather than a scale reading. The forks and spoons are solid sterling; the knives have hollow handles that are filled, so their gross weight overstates their silver content and refiners discount them accordingly. An exact weighed figure will be given to any serious buyer on request, and the two are weighed separately.
