1903 Campbell Metzger Jacobson Chromolithograph on Linen Native American Chief
PRODUCT DETAILS
• Brand: Campbell, Metzger & Jacobson, New York
• Material: Chromolithograph printed on woven linen/cotton textile
• Dimensions: Framed approx. 24 1/4 x 24 1/4 in; printed image approx. 21 1/2 x 21 1/2 in
• Color/Finish: Pale green graduated ground with strong color retention in the headdress, beadwork, and gold star gorget; period faux tiger-grain painted frame
• Condition: Fair to good - cloth is overall toned and yellowed with light soiling and scattered small dark specks, and shows slight surface rippling; frame has chips and finish loss along the bottom rail and corners with flaking at two points on the right rail; glazed, not examined out of the frame
• Era/Period: Copyright 1903; frame is period, early 20th century
• Subject: Unsigned commercial design - a generic, idealised "Indian chief" of the period's decorative imagination, not a portrait of a named individual; the star gorget and cross-and-triangle beadwork are composite decorative invention rather than a documented outfit
This chromolithograph panel was printed directly on linen by the New York textile house Campbell, Metzger & Jacobson, with the firm's copyright line for 1903 printed into the design itself at lower right. It is a mass-produced decorative textile panel of the type sold as pillow tops and art panels in the early 1900s, and the Native American chief subject is one of the stronger images this maker produced. The piece still carries its original period frame, and color in the headdress, beadwork, and gorget remains vivid despite overall toning of the cloth.
