Large abraded loss at the upper left corner where the black ground and much of the gilding are worn through to the tan ground, taking part of the teahouse roof and lantern valance; continuous rub-through along the flat of the rim on all sides; chipping and loss along the outer rim edge at the lower left and across the bottom; a network of fine scratches and white scuffs across the well, heaviest at center; fine crackle in the thicker black passages. No warping, no splits, no structural damage, and the tray sits flat

• Era/Period: 19th century, most likely c. 1860-1890

• Subject: Japanese teahouse and garden scene — kimono-clad women with shimada hairstyles seated on lacquered benches, zori set on the ground, a brazier with kettle, a byobu screen in a crackled-ice pattern, paper lanterns bearing mon, autumn grasses, peonies, and a lake with a sailing boat and tiled temple beyond. The scene is Japanese, not Chinese, and should not be called chinoiserie. No signature, seal or maker's stamp appears on the decorated surface, and no maker or workshop is attributed; the decoration is consistent with either Japanese export lacquer or English japanned ware made in the Japanese taste, and the tray is offered simply as a 19th century japanned tray with Japanese decoration

At roughly 28 1/2 by 22 inches this is a full-size butler's or table tray, the largest commercial size, and it reads across a room whether it is hung on a wall, set on an ottoman or laid on a console. The painting is freehand work rather than transfer printing — the gilding is shaded with fine hatching and the figures, architecture and dress are drawn with real accuracy. The wear is genuine and concentrated where a tray is actually handled and set down, and it is photographed and described here in detail so you know exactly what you are buying. Priced as found; we have not cleaned, waxed or touched in the surface, and we would not recommend anyone do so.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0989/6283/3779/files/91610170-ec9c-4053-bb45-7d6beb2c498e.png?v=1790044547
https://vaultxlshop.com/products/19th-century-japanned-tray-japanese-teahouse-garden-scene-gilt-on-black-lacquer
